Obama To Meet With Aung San Suu Kyi
Washington, USA: President Obama will meet with Myanmar democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi at the White House today, a senior administration official confirms. Also today, the Nobel Peace laureate will be presented with the Congressional Gold Medal at a Capitol ceremony.
She was awarded the medal, Congress’ highest honor, in 2008 while under house arrest imposed by her country’s ruling military junta.
Suu Kyi arrived in the U.S. on Monday for a 17-day visit, her first since her release from detention in 2010, and met with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Tuesday. U.S. relations with Myanmar have softened over the past two years. Clinton traveled to Myanmar last year, where she met with Suu Kyi and in July Obama also visited Myanmar.
